Clear Aligners: How do they work?

Have you ever wondered how clear aligners work?  Most of us know that they are worn over the teeth similar to a retainer or mouthguard, but how do they move teeth into their correct positions?  Dental aligners have revolutionized orthodontic treatment, providing an esthetic and comfortable alternative to traditional braces.  You may have heard of popular clear aligner brands used by dentists and orthodontists, such as Invisalign®, Spark, Clarity, and Angel Aligner.  But how do these invisible tray systems work to achieve smile perfection?

Let's explore the science behind the system!

The science of tooth movement

Clear aligners are custom-made, transparent trays that fit over your teeth.   Each set of aligners is designed to make slight adjustments to the positions of your teeth.  As you progress through a series of trays created for you, each new set slowly guides your teeth into the planned alignment.

Clear aligners rely on the principles of biomechanics.  This is the concept of applying controlled forces to an object to obtain specific movements.  Each aligner tray is designed to deliver a sustained and specific force on a tooth to be moved.  As a result of applying pressure to areas of the tooth, the body reacts by breaking down the bone around the tooth in the areas of pressure, and rebuilding it in the areas of tension.  Thus, the bone surrounding the tooth undergoes a reshaping process that allows the tooth to move.

Each set of aligners is worn for a specific period, typically one to two weeks, before moving on to the next set.  This steady transition enables teeth to move gradually, allowing the surrounding bone and tissues to adapt and reshape.

How are aligners made?

Aligners are typically designed utilizing computer-aided design (CAD) technology. Your doctor will manipulate a detailed 3D model of your teeth to engineer and map out the precise movement of each tooth, step by step, to reach the desired positions.  The outcome?  A custom-made set of transparent aligners that gradually shift your teeth into their ideal positions.

What are aligner attachments?

Attachments are nearly invisible bumps or buttons bonded to the teeth or aligner trays.  They come in different shapes and sizes, helping to precisely guide tooth movement by applying different force systems.  These attachments help to both grip the tooth, and to ensure accurate movement throughout the orthodontic treatment.

What do invisible aligners treat?

With an orthodontist’s expert planning, nearly any misaligned bite can be treated with clear aligners.  The most common conditions treated by aligners include:

  • Gapped teeth (spacing)

  • Crowded teeth

  • Overbite (deep bite)

  • Underbite

  • Open bite

  • Overjet

  • Crossbite

Clear aligners may be a treatment option if you want straighter teeth and a less visible option to traditional braces.

Expertise of an Orthodontist

While clear aligners have their allure and advantages, it's essential to remember that successful treatment relies on the expertise of the treating aligner doctor.  An orthodontist will evaluate your teeth and bite, and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique smile goals, and monitor your progress throughout treatment.

Orthodontic treatment involves more than just straightening teeth; it's about ensuring a healthy result, functional bite, and stability.  Orthodontic specialists have the knowledge and expertise to evaluate your individual needs and provide safe and effective treatment.

The dangers of DIY aligners

In the age of online shopping and quick fixes, it is tempting to consider do-it-yourself aligner options that promise a straighter smile at a fraction of the cost. However, these DIY kits come with significant risks.  Without the guidance of an orthodontist, you may experience complications such as tooth damage, gum and bone recession, or even bite misalignment. You risk causing irreversible damage to your teeth and bite, which may lead to costly fixes for problems that arise.

A clear path to confidence

Clear aligners are a modern advancement in orthodontic treatment, offering a discreet and effective way to achieve a beautiful smile which planned by an experienced orthodontist. By seeking the expertise of a specialist and avoiding the pitfalls of DIY solutions, you can enjoy a journey to confidence and a radiant, healthy smile.
